TLC – Decorating the Teen Dept

This Saturday, December 19, at 1:00p.m. , we will be decorating the Teen Dept.  Let me know if you’re coming.  We’ll be having pizza!

TLC and other news

The Teen Library Council (TLC) has some news to share!

At the October meeting, the TLC decided to appoint officers.  Our president is Alicia Jefferson, our vice-president is Asia Carson, our secretary is Jasmine Dismukes and our treasurer is Tim Paul.  Congratulations to our fabulous four!

At our November meeting this past Saturday, we decided to try a few new things.  The first of which is our very own teen newsletter.  Our editor will be Tim Paul and our graphic artist will be Asia Carson.  If you’d like to submit your artwork or writing, please send it to me at vpeters@wixomlibrary.org or bring it up to the library.  Our first edition will be coming out in February or March of 2010.

We also decided to REdecorate the Teen Department.  If you’re interested in helping or have some ideas, please let me know ASAP.  We will be trying to get this done over winter break!

Wrestlemania Reading Challenge

Want to win 2 tickets to Wrestlemania 26?
You can read the official rules here.

Here’s the deal:
Teens in Grades 5-12 are welcome to participate in this challenge.  You’ve got to come in and pick up a reading log.  You must read 10 books, graphic novels and/or magazines.  These books can’t be a reading assignment for school.  Once you’ve read your 10 books and turned in your log, you are eligible to enter the bookmark contest.  You must design a bookmark with a slogan that promotes reading.  Entries are due by January 19, 2010.

Day of the Dead…

We were supposed to decorate sugar skulls and make masks…but the bakery flaked on us.  So we decorated cupcakes in the shape of skulls instead.  And we still made the masks…

Teen Read Week

Summer Reading Program…Pictures!!!

The Teen Summer Reading was a blast this year.  Here are some pictures of the festivities…

Jay Penfil – Martial Arts Program, Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, Ice Cream Social, Altered Art and our Final Party – DDR:

This summer’s winners were Alicia Jefferson – 1st prize ($50 giftcard to Twelve Oaks), Amauri Poyntz – 2nd prize ($30 gift certificate to Paradise Park), and Melissa Kalanik – 3rd prize ($20 giftcard to Emagine).  Great job guys!

Week 1 of Summer Reading

Registration began last Monday and we’re off to a great start.  Tonight will be our very first program.  Michigan Author/Artist Mark Crilley will be presenting an hour program at 6 p.m. in the Meeting Room.  He will do several on-the-spot drawings that he will be leaving behind as gifts for the library and maybe a lucky winner!  Mr. Crilley will also be letting in on some of the secrets of being an author and we hope he will have time for questions!

Registration is helpful in advance…but you can always stop by if you happen to be at the library!

Next week’s program is a Martial Arts demonstration by Sensei Penfil.  He has a studio right here in Wixom.  He has very generously offered to donate his time to teach us a little about martial arts.

Don’t forget to register for the Summer Reading Club!  The first 100 teens to sign up will receive a coupon for a free cone at Ritters.  (Thanks Ritters!!!)
